New York State Police worked with law enforcement partners in Suffolk County to conduct a multi-agency “4/20” enforcement operation focusing on driving while ability impaired (DWAI) and unlawful possession of marijuana.
The detail involved both stationary and roving checkpoints throughout Suffolk County.
The agencies that participated in this enforcement detail counted a total of eight DWI arrests, 17 unlawful possession of marijuana arrests and more than 40 vehicle and traffic law infractions, police say.
Agencies that conducted the detail include:
- New York State Police
- Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department
- Suffolk County Police Department
- Riverhead Police Department
- Town of Southampton Police Department
- Shelter Island Police Department
- Town of Southold Police Department
- Village of Quogue Police Department
- Village of Westhampton Beach Police Department
Officers say the team enforcement effort helped to ensure highway safety and raise public awareness that operating a vehicle under the influence of marijuana can have unfortunate consequences much like alcohol and other substances.
